Abstract

Using a longitudinal, repeated-measures approach, we test whether a smartphone designed to deliver short surveys at periodic intervals throughout the day can be used to capture key information on respondent behaviors and attitudes over time. Leveraging a study of 384 South Africans conducted during the 2010 FIFA World Cup games, respondents were administered a brief survey five times per day for 33 days and asked to take a picture of what they were focused on at the time of the survey. Focusing on critical questions of task compliance, we examine completion rates and three additional indicators of survey compliance. The research demonstrates how Smartphones can expand traditional survey methods, capturing both cross-time and “in-the-moment” data.
